Memorial Day Weekend Surf

Aw yes, Memorial Day Weekend.  In New Hampshire it magically turned from disgusting weeks of rain and 60 degree temps to full-on 80, sunny, and humid with some fun surf just in time to keep the traveling tourists sane and stoked at the beginning of summer.  We stopped by Salisbury Beach for the inaugural stop of the newly-formed Atlantic Paddle Battle, which will be a 6-stop race series this summer with a $5,000 cash purse.  This is a great new event started by our friends at Zapstix Surf Shop and will give a fun venue for surfers to get in the water when the waves are quiet this summer.

The men’s Open Class heads out into the brutal cross-wind to start the buoy-to-buoy race.

Rincon Surf Trip Has “World’s Greatest Treehouses”

Just came across the article talking about the history of the wild self-sustaining bamboo treehouses Jo Scheer built in Rincon, Puerto Rico and that are the accomodations for our SASS Global Travel Rincon surf trip. They were named the “World’s Greatest Treehouses” by the Travel Channel and it’s pretty clear why once you read the article, which goes over the whole process and history of the Puerto Rico treehouses. Check it out!

By Douglas Michaels, Jr.

Named the “World’s Greatest Treehouse” by the Travel Channel, these bamboo tree-houses (or “hooches”) stand among the beautiful rainforests of Rincon, Puerto Rico just miles from exotic beaches and are a perfect example of the booming eco-tourism trend.

The DR team in Lima, Peru

Cabarete local Eduar “Papito” Santana is crushing it this year and made the team, thanks partly due his sponsorship by SGT DR partner Zapstix Surf Shop from Seabrook, NH.  Best of luck to the team as they crush waves in Peru!

New Trip Photos!

Just spent the better part of the morning uploading new photos to the different trips – now Japan, Argentina, Treasure Mtn. Hut in Colorado, Vermont, The Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and Nicaragua all have loads of hi-res goodness to slake over… big thanks to all our contributing photographers for making these come together!

The new Rincon, Puerto Rico gallery…

And the new South America Snow Sessions gallery.  Fun looking back on our epic summer down in Argentina.

Battling with student loan

Having student loans is not unusual. In fact, 45 million people have them. It’s also incredibly common to feel overwhelmed by your student loan payments.

A survey of student loan borrowers found that almost 65% of respondents said they lose sleep because of the stress caused by their loans. If you find yourself overwhelmed by your monthly student loan payment, there are some options you should consider to lessen the burden. If you still haven’t taken out a student loan, be sure to use a student loan calculator to determine how much you can afford.

Before you can explore alternatives, however, you need to know the types of loans you have. Certain options are only available for federal loans as opposed to private loans. Check the Federal Student Aid website to determine any federal loans you may have, and request your free credit report to see any private loans. Once you’re familiar with your loans, you can consider new courses of action.

Create a Budget
If you don’t already have a budget, create one! This will allow you to see if you can afford your current student loan payment. It will also show you areas where you’re spending unnecessarily. If you find there just isn’t enough income to cover all your necessary expenses, then you can begin working on different ways to reduce your student loan payment.

Research Different Payment Plans
If your federal student loan payment is overwhelming, consider switching to a different payment plan. When you initially begin repayment, your loans are automatically put on the standard repayment plan. On this plan, your payments are based on a ten-year repayment term.

A Direct Consolidation Loan can help you change your payment plan to help make your payment more affordable. It can also help consolidate multiple federal loans into one loan. (Note: Consolidating your federal loans is different from student loan refinancing, discussed below.)
