SGT Cabarete, the Dominican Republic’s newest beachfront multi-sport destination, sits on a quiet stretch of the Amber Coast at the point of Cabarete Bay. We picked this spot to be able to provide a destination with the best ocean activities combined with a fun and educational cultural experience, and the chance to hang out for a week or two with a famous artist, photographer, musician or pro athlete. Some of the world’s best wind conditions, with steady side-onshore winds especially in the afternoon, make it ideal for kiteboarders. And while the Dominican Republic lies under the radar of the larger Caribbean surf scene, it shares the same swell as Puerto Rico but without the crowds. Countless point and beach breaks sit hidden from the popular Encuentro beach crowds and a super-friendly local surf scene offers glassy morning sessions before the trade winds pick up.  Flat water spots and amazing warm water make it great for the SUP crowd as well. The Dominican Republic is the ideal place to escape winter, and is one of the most accessible and reliable spots in the Caribbean.

After an early-morning flight, you’ll be walking out the front door of Porta del Mare and into the 84 degree water by early afternoon, ensuring you get the maximum number of sessions during your stay. Having the help of SGT and our local guides, you’ll be sure to find uncrowded waves, water and wind up and down the Amber Coast.  With the help of SGT surf guide Jesmarin Puente, Director of the Dominican Surfing Federation, find the best surf and welcoming vibes from the locals.  From the four breaks you can see from the cliff at La Preciosa to the river mouth of La Boca, SGT makes hassle-free sessions in the DR a reality.  SGT is also one of the only operations offering intermediate and advanced kiteboarding lessons, having professional kiter Cameron Dietrich on staff to help you progress to a new level in your riding. Options exist as well for beginner surf and kite lessons along with excursions to go stand-up paddleboarding, wakeboarding, kayaking, off-road motorbiking, horseback riding, yoga and spin classes, and even a session at the spa.

SGT Cabarete provides guests with a private poolside & beachfront luxury accommodations. Custom options exist for individuals to large and corporate groups, with options for long weekends to month-long excursions. If you bring your guitar, you can even make your Dominican debut with the SGT crew in one of their weekly local shows in town.

Sessions with the legends during the day, chill at night with an amazing crew -- Join SGT and get ready to experience one of the Caribbean’s best-kept secrets. SGT Cabarete -- your active vacation destination for couples, groups, families, and friends.

Kiteboarding

Kiteboarding is the hottest new water sport and Cabarete is the Mecca. This small Caribbean town has some of the best kitesurfing conditions in the world, with consistent, steady side-onshore winds, the large, open bay at Cabarete, and good launch areas.  Accordingly, some of the greatest in the sport have chosen Cabarete as their regular training camp to practice the sport year round. Cabarete is consistently chosen to host the World Championships, held every 3rd week of June. Most of the world’s best come to Cabarete to compete in perfect conditions and have the best time of their lives. SGT Cabarete gives you the opportunity to try it out for the first time, or hone your skills with lessons for any experience level.

Surfing

The North Coast is becoming increasingly popular for surfing due to its warm waters, minimal crowds, and number of spots both obvious and hidden, from the several beach breaks at Encuentro (1o minutes from the Porta del Mare) to the seldom-ridden point and reef breaks you’ll have to come with us to find. While the area is famous for its great kiteboarding conditions, the winds hold off until lunch, meaning glassy, empty morning sessions all over. It’s a fantastic spot for beginners, as well as for those looking for something much more challenging. The local surfers are extremely friendly and will help give you the lay of the waves. The best time of year to surf is from mid-Nov to April. Intermediate and advanced surfers will be guided by Jesmarin Puente, Director of the Dominican Surf Federation (see “Staff” tab for bio), and beginner surf lessons are available as well.

  • Beginner Surf Lesson: $45/day/person
  • Performance Surfboard Rental: $25/day or $100/week (intermediate-advanced surf guiding included in trip price)

SUPing (Stand-Up Paddleboarding)

When the outer reefs collect swells, it is here where expert paddle-boarders ride world class waves. The hurricane season and the winter storm season provide amazing waves for advanced SUP surfers. The protected bays have calmer waters inside the reef for intermediate paddle boarding, while Kite Beach Lagoon offers excellent paddling for beginners looking to try the sport for the first time and watch the sea life pass by underneath.

SUP Lessons:

  • Private lesson: $80/person
  • Semi-private: $55/person
  • Small group (3-4): $45/person
  • Large group (5-8): $35/person

SUP Rentals:

  • 1 hour: $20
  • 3 hours: $45
  • All day: $55

Spearfishing

Spearfishing is good and our local guides know where to go. Equipment can be purchased at most of the supermarkets or hardware stores or rented from local shops.  Most of the fish are snappers, some groupers, and different silver sides but mostly snapper. Most dives are between 15 ft to 45ft.

$55/person

Horseback Riding

Whether you’re a first time rider, or have been riding for many years, you will enjoy the horseback rides available at several ranches in the area. You can ride on the beach along the coast, or take trails through the lush tropical mountain forests. Many ranch rides include cultural information about the country and the area, as well as picnic lunches after a fun ride.

$55/person

Off-Road Motocross Excursions

Now here is one activity that might not have considered on your trip to SGT Cabarete. It’s not for everyone but, if you have at least basic motorcycle riding experience, there are several fun tours to suit your skills. The mountainous terrain behind Cabarete is one of the most incredible enduro playgrounds on this planet. There are literally thousands of trails (many of them are donkey trails) crossing mountains, valleys, rivers, jungles and villages. The tours cater to both beginners and experts alike. Our partner outfit has all the experience and equipment required for a safe, fun and challenging day on the trails. All the bikes are KTM Enduro specific bikes, with all protective gear, snacks and and guides provided. The tours go where no normal tourist would ever venture on his own.

$225/person

Snorkeling

Clear turquoise waters in the Sosua area, just 15 minutes from Cabarete, provide unique snorkeling experiences and an abundance of underwater life.

$90/hour

Trapeze Lessons

Full lessons to get the feeling of flying from one person to the other one… a GREAT experience.

Kayaking

Paddle your way through rapids and clear pools under a canopy of lush tropical vegetation. Swing from Tarzan vines, jump in the water, swim with the fish, listen to the birds and enjoy the incredibly beautiful countryside. Fun and easy, ideal for families and friends, these trips are usually 4 hours long with transportation and lunch included.

$50/person

Waterfall Hikes

The adventure starts with an easy hike following the river upstream for around 20 minutes to the first waterfall.  From here you hike, swim and climb up to the top waterfall.  Once you make it all the way up to enjoy the view, jump, slide and swim your way back down to base camp through the various waterfalls and collecting pools.

Cabarete - The Town

[SinglePic not found]Cabarete is famous for having excellent conditions for surfing, SUP’ing and kiteboarding. Everything revolves around the two kilometers of Cabarete Beach. On the two kilometer stretch of beach along Cabarete Bay, a number of beachside restaurants have turned up along with small boutique hotels and shops.

The restaurants, bars, surf shops and occasional hotel are located just far enough from the beach to add to the destination and not detract from the enjoyment of the beach.  The attractiveness of Cabarete is in the people and the mingling of tourists who enjoy the intimacy of the smaller non-inclusive hotels that encourage their guests to venture out and discover Cabarete. In the evening, the restaurants, many of them first-class, place their tables on the beach to serve dinner.  The evening experience of strolling on the beach under the stars from one place to the other to pick the restaurant for the evening is part of what makes the Cabarete experience special.

Cabarete Nightlife
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Cabarete Bay hosts a variety of restaurants and bars, each with their own speciality. Cabarete has a pumping nightlife, so go visit some bars. A lot of bars have live local music, like Cabaha with live music on Wednesdays and Pomodoro with live jazz every Thursday night -- you may even get invited to play a gig with some of SGT’s ground staff.   As well, many bars and restaurants turn into discotheques around midnight and normally stay open until around 3 am.
Most bars have happy hours anywhere from 3 pm-1 am everyday, like Kahuna’s 6 hour happy hour that runs from 3pm -- 9pm or Lax’s with their 2X1 mojitos from 6-7 pm.  A classic to start the night is Blue Bar, a local bar that gives away their drinks for US$1,50.  Then the best places to go partying are Lax, Nikki beach, Bambu, Onno’s, Ojo, Kahuna Bar and Voyvoy for their famous Karaoke night.  If you haven’t had enough when the bars close at 3 am, the casino stays open until early in the morning with good DJ’s.

Traveling to Cabarete

Choose a direct flight for the airport of Puerto Plata (POP code).

A valid passport is required by all nationalities for entry. Check your nations Embassy for Visa requirements (not required for the United States or Canada).

A Tourist Card must be purchased upon arrival at the airport. Currently the price is US $10. Keep a copy with you at all times. It must be presented to officials upon departure, otherwise you will have to pay an Airport Departure Tax about US $20.

When you arrive at the airport you will go through immigration and pick up any checked luggage in baggage claim. Once outside the airport you will find many young Dominican men eager to help you with your baggage who expect a tip. Two US dollars or 40 RD$ is a good tip. If you don’t want to feel pressured to tip, you should insist that they not pick up your bags. Do not pay any money at customs.

Once outside, expect to see a member of the SGT ground staff waiting to take you down to Cabarete.

Porta del Mare is about 20 minutes’ drive from Puerto Plata Airport.

For your departure you will have to pay a departure tax of $20 USD.

Kite Boarding

screen-shot-2011-08-26-at-2-03-36-pm We are please to announce that one of our favorite kite boarders will join us this year at SGT Cabarete -Cameron Dietrich. Cameron will be coordinating all kite board activities. Cameron has years of experience on every type of board in the ocean and is a phenomenal kiteboarder, and in particular has helped pushed the niche sport of kitesurfing to new levels, with many covers coming out featuring Cameron’s insane barrell-riding techniques while still using a kite. Cameron’s regarded as a pioneer, constantly pushing what can be done with a kite and a regular, directional surf board, be it with maneuvers in powerful beachbreaks or maching into giant barrells all around the world.  Check out Cam’s website at camdietrich.com.

“Cam has helped redefine what is possible in kiting; he epitomizes the quintessential all-around kitesurfer, capable in wedgey, ramp-stocked beach-breaks as well as death-defying waves of consequence.
