Join SASS as we explore new frontiers in Iceland with week-long small group discovery trips to Iceland’s spectacular Troll Peninsula. Experience Iceland’s most iconic descents via heli-assisted touring in one of the most inspiring settings on earth, joined by a SASS Guest Pro each week with air support from the Icelandic heliski veterans at Viking Heliskiing. 

Your trip lasts a total of seven nights: After arriving in Reykjavik, you’ll hop aboard a short flight to Iceland’s northernmost city, Akureyri. Surrounded by fjords and mountain peaks, you’ll spend five nights with your SASS group in nearby Siglufjörður, our far-north home base for four (4) fully-guided touring days in the surrounding mountains, three (3) of which are helicopter-assisted.

After we conclude our on-mountain portion, your last two nights are spent in Iceland’s uniquely cosmopolitan capital city of Reykjavik, before flying home. This also gives us an opportunity to explore Iceland’s world-renowned hot springs… or if you’re a surfer, maybe even join us for a single-day surfing adventure (wetsuit included!).

LODGING & INCLUSIONS: Siglunes Guesthouse – Siglufjörður

Experience true Icelandic hospitality with a unique flavor at Siglunes Guesthouse, a family-owned lodge with premier access to the best skiing the Troll Peninsula has to offer, including rooms with en-suite baths and renowned restaurant featuring Icelandic and Moroccan specialties.

SASS Iceland Inclusions:

• Lodging for Seven (7) Nights, including en-suite bath:

  • Five (5) Nights at Siglunes Lodge, Siglufjörður

  • Two (2) Nights at Hotel Klettur, Reykjavik

• Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Included for Five (5 Days) while staying at the Siglunes Lodge; last two days in Reykjavik include breakfast-only, during which you’re welcome to explore Reykjavik’s impressive cuisine.

  • You’ll also enjoy a special Welcome Dinner for your first night at Siglunes and a SASS-hosted ‘Farewell Reception’ on Friday evening in Reykjavik.

• Four (4) Guided Backcountry Days, including three (3)  helicopter-assisted touring days. Your trip concludes with two nights in Reykjavik before returning.

• Airport Transfers in Akureyri with meet-and-greet service available for connections in Reykjavik.

Small Groups: Owing to the ongoing pandemic and related health concerns, we are limiting SASS Iceland to a maximum of 12 clients. Please note, 2-3 SASS staff members will be in attendance along with clients, in addition to hospitality team members or other local Icelandic staff.

Touring and Ability Level: Our multiple groups can accommodate different touring ability levels, but you must use and bring touring skis or a split board for this trip. This trip requires ‘Advanced’ skiing/riding ability with touring experience at or above the level of Novice. What’s Novice Touring Experience? If you’ve been on touring skis or a splitboard less than five times, regardless of your skiing/riding ability, drop us a line first so we can help assess your ability and goals for the trip.

Iceland’s COVID19 “Opening Status” and Requirements: Iceland is currently open to visitors from most nations. In order to avoid quarantine requirements, a COVID19 vaccination certificate or documented antibodies from COVID19 recovery is required, along with a negative COVID19 test prior to travel. Likewise, the US also requires a negative test result prior to your return (SASS will help you facilitate testing in Iceland prior to your return). Masks are widely required. Terrain: Iceland’s northern Troll Peninsula has dramatic mountains, Mount Kerling (Kerlingarfjöll) rises to nearly 5,000 ft (1438m) with many ranges descending dramatically into the fjords below. Terrain varies from intermediate to expert with a variety of routes to accommodate groups with different ability levels and goals.

More About “Heli Assisted” Touring and Additional Heli Drops: Heli-Assisted Touring means that you take a helicopter to a skiing zone at the beginning of the day, where you will then use touring skis or splitboard to access a number of runs (depending on group ability, stamina, terrain, etc.) before being picked up by the helicopter in the afternoon. In some cases, the helicopter may drop you above a zone and allow you to ride to a pickup point with your guide to end the day. In addition, there *may* be an opportunity to ‘add’ additional heli drops to the end of the day; if available, these are generally 600 EUR per lap, or as low as 150 EUR per client in a full helicopter. Extra laps are not guaranteed, price subject to change.

Snow: The area averages over 250″ (7m) of snow annually. Temperatures vary in March and April — many days offer powder, but many days offer sunny corn skiing and world class views. If you’re looking for a ‘powder only’ trip, it is not a guarantee here, but it’s incredibly fun backcountry skiing/riding in a truly spectacular setting. Come with an open mind towards the snow and the weather… and prepare to have an incredible experience.

Weather Days / Helicopter Uptime: Our heliski operator, Viking Heliskiing, reports a general ~80% uptime for heli operations in late March and early April. However, snowfall and wind can be unpredictable. This is also why we have one “non-heli” day built into the itinerary (to absorb the impact of a potential weather day), however neither SASS nor Viking Heliskiing make any guarantee as to the number of flying hours. In the event of continued no-fly weather, SASS and local guides will make all reasonable efforts to provide a non-motorized guiding experience.

Discovery Trips: This means you’ll be part of a ‘new’ SASS trip! SASS has over a decade of experience in the mountains and we work with experienced, local guiding professionals to help ensure that everything operates safely. But, we’ll ask for your feedback (and sometimes your patience!) as it’s our first time hosting a SASS group in this location. Past SASS clients are especially encouraged to join us.
