MOUNTAIN & TERRAIN

JapRedHeadingRule

SASS Japan, now based at Kiroro Mountain Resort and founding partner of the Kiroro Backcountry Club, offers clients the opportunity to explore impressive terrain options around Kiroro, Kokusai and of course, the road-side pillow lines that have made Japan famous. Smaller groups will also leave Kiroro during the session to explore backcountry zones or other resorts in the area, including Moiwa, Niseko and Rusutsu depending on conditions and the day’s mission.

KIRORO RESORT

Kiroro is a lesser known resort tucked up at the first set of mountains to be hit by storms crossing the sea of Japan from Siberia. At a higher elevation than the Niseko areas, it typically receives the most snow of any resort on Hokkaido. And that’s saying something. Add in the lack of crowds and immediate access to unreal limitless backcountry terrain, and you can understand why we have moved our operation to become the only private backcountry guide operation based at Kiroro.

Kiroro offers lift access to some of the best side country terrain in Japan. If it is dumping and deep and the lifts are spinning there is no reason not to get in as many laps as possible at the ski area. Additionally, Kiroro is surrounded by multiple ridge lines creating the access points for copious backcountry missions. Perfectly spaced tress and some of the steepest terrain on Hokkaido compliment the insane amount of snow.

OTHER RESORTS / AREAS

While based at Kiroro, we keep a flexible schedule and multiple 4×4 vans on hand to access additional locations throughout Hokkaido. With the Niseko Resorts, Rusutsu and a seemingly infinite number of road lap options all within 45 minutes we can be mobile and make sure we are hitting the most snow and best conditions possible every day. Ski unreal tree runs all the way to the ocean, mini-golf pillow lines, tour up an abandoned ski area, summit a volcano, hit a man-made features park or night ski right next to the hotel. All are viable options and your guides have the knowledge to put you in the exact where you want to be.

TERRAIN

JapRedHeadingRuleThin

In Japan it is all about the snow. Chest-deep, tits-deeps, snorkel-worthy, bottomless whiteroom pow. That’s why you come. While the weather is, well, the weather, Hokkaido offers the best chance of consistent pow days in the world. The cold air crosses Siberia and picks up moisture over the Sea of Japan and deposits some of the lightest snow on earth on the mountains of Hokkaido. It truly is something every passionate skier or rider simply has to experience.

The old-growth hardwood trees grow perfectly separated throughout Hokkaido giving us fun and playful tree skiing. This is our bred and butter. The highest mountains on Hokkaido top out at under 1700 meters (~5500 feet). The runs are not endless, but the quality of the turns is untouchable. Steeps are few and far between (don’t worry, we know where they are), but the playfulness of the slopes make them more than enjoyable even for the most bad-ass of skiers. If pillow lines are desired, we can show you how its done.
