My trip out to Tahoe started with high hopes.  And how could it not? The forecast called for ridiculous amounts of snow most of the week; not to mention that it would be my first time visiting the region.

My first few days were spent at Northstar.  I was looking forward to riding Northstar’s famous parks, but the snow buried all but a handful of the mountain’s park features, so right away I was looking for something else to huck my carcass off.  I cruised through the spacious glades of the Backside and Lookout Mountain where deep powder was abundant.  However, my pursuit for air, so far, yielded almost nothing.  From there, I headed to the Whit Rabbit sidecountry area, where I had spotted multitudes of rock outcroppings from the Backside chair.  I found the cliffs I had been looking for after hiking, traversing and billy-goating over rocks, trees and bushes. The first two drops, relatively small, had gone smoothly.  The last two hurt my knees just thinking about them.  I planned to launch off of a small, snow-covered fin, into a drop of around twelve feet.  The landing, I would soon find out, was flatter than anticipated.  I popped, sucked up my knees, impacted, and tumbled head over heels.  This was a maneuver I would perfect over the upcoming days.

Getting to Know Kelly Haddon

If you read our last newsletter, you’d know that Kelly Haddon of Boulder, Colorado won the Grand Prize of the Deeper movie tour – an all-expenses paid trip to our South America Snow Sessions operation in Argentina with roundtrip airfare courtesy of our generous partners at LAN Airlines.  Kelly didn’t believe her fortune at first, but after blowing her up on speakerphone with the whole SGT crew, she had to give in to the reality of her blind luck.

We’re very excited to get Kelly down to SASS this summer and wanted to take a minute to let the world know who this lucky lady is.

Who the heck are you?
I am a 26 year old girl, living in Boulder and loving the outdoors. I ski, run, bike, hike and anything else that takes advantage of the amazing Colorado weather year round. I work for Helly Hansen, I have two dogs and an avid skier boyfriend who is madly jealous of my prize.

How long have you been skiing and where do you ski now?

I didn’t grow up skiing, living in Virginia, but became obsessed once I moved out to CO in my twenties. This season I had the Copper-Winter Park pass but was also able to hit Telluride, Vail and Aspen as well as test out my first few adventures on my new touring set up.

Congrats Coulter!

We’d like to take this chance to congratulate our SASS Argentina guide Chris Coulter on signing his new sponsorship with the First Ascent outerwear line.  Coulter is one of the living legends of backcountry snowboarding and we’re so stoked for his new supporter!

Coulter’s already been getting after it with First Ascent, living in their trailer at Tailgate Alaska and slaying lines from the helicopter.  Check him out slaying in AK!

Harry Sherman

As we mentioned – Harry Sherman, a 16-year old snowboarder from the Bay Area who crushes Squaw on the weekends and has been leaving his mark on the SASS crew for a long time, crashed during his boardercross run at the USASA Nationals in Copper mtn., Colorado last week.  According the post left after the accident by his parents,

“Our son, Harry Sherman, was in a snowboarding racing accident at the USASA Nationals at Copper Mountain, CO on Wed, April 6. He was unconscious at the scene of the accident which occurred at 9:45 am on the Boardercross course. He is in a coma and has not regained consciousness from the accident. Copper Mountain’s ER team was unable to evacuate Harry by helicopter, due to weather. He was taken by ambulance to a Level I Trauma Center in Denver. Harry reached the Trauma Center within two hours of the accident and has been here since. He has some fluid in his lungs, additional fluid between the lungs and chest cavity, a cracked rib and bruises on his soft tissues (chest, neck), and bruised neck vertebrae, but all of those are manageable and just make him uncomfortable. However, he has suffered a brain injury from the impact. The brain injury is called shearing, which has resulted in bleeding in his brain. Both CAT scans and MRI have been performed. The neurosurgeon who examined him yesterday and today does not believe there is a need to operate to reduce the pressure from the bleeding at this time. While the injury was yesterday, swelling occurs later. We are watching the swelling hour by hour. The cranium of a 16 year old fits tight around the brain and there isn’t really extra room to accommodate swelling. He was been breathing on a ventilator, but they weaned him off it this morning, and he is now breathing on his own. He does not respond to any verbal commands and has not opened his eyes; he remains in a coma. On the more positive side, he is moving his arms and legs and he is young, healthy and strong. We will remain in Denver as long as necessary. Sandy and I appreciate your love and prayers.”

Since Harry arrived at the trauma center, he has gone from a Level 2 to a Level 4 (1 being the worst-8 the best), and although he is still in a coma about 20 hours a day, he can sit up, eat solid food and drink liquid, feel his hands and feet, and even put on the medal his teammates brought him.  While he can’t speak or seem to hear well, as the brain swelling comes down his situation slowly improves.  The doctors expect to move him out of intensive care and into a rehab center within a week.

We will be following Harry’s situation closely and keep you all updated as he moves along the slow road to recovery.  Harry has been a model of perseverance and strength for the SASS family for many years, from coaches to clients, and we are all pulling for him every day.  We know his genius is simply sleeping and somewhere in the back of his mind is an invention idea of some kind of next-generation hydrodynamic fusion as we sit here.  We look forward to seeing Harry come back and crush his favorite lines in Argentina, and have every amount of faith we’ll be seeing him do that.

Leave a message for Harry here on the blog or on his guestbook, where you can also follow his progress.  Go get ’em Shermanator!!!!

SGT at USASA Nationals – superpost!

SASS alum James “Haffy” Haffner en route to a 6th place finish in the Open Men’s slopestyle at Nationals.

So the SGT crew finally got out of the East Coast to head to the beautiful, sun, wine and snow-drenched slopes of Copper Mountain, Colorado.  With over a 1000 snowboard competitors from ages 9-62 from across the Lower 48 and Alaska descending on Summit County to compete in boardercross, giant slalom, slalom, halfpipe and slopestyle, the USASA Nationals is quite a spectacle, with every contest running every day for a different age group.

Our partners Sierra Nevada College sent one of their unsuspecting admissions officers, Aaron, along to spread the good word of SNC at our tent, and we had steady traffic coming by all week long.

Nicki Slechta Season Update

Since leaving Argentina and coming back to the states I didn’t really know what to expect from this season. In Argentina we were blessed with an amazing amount of snowfall and tons of powder days. I definitely went into this season with high hopes for pow riding, and not much intention of riding park. In mid November Tahoe was hit with a 5 ft storm that kicked off some really fun early season powder days. I was just getting back into the swing of riding, going hiking in the backcountry for some fun lines, when I got the email that I was invited to do the Winter Dew Tour. With 2 weeks until the contest, I decided to do it. It was a complete 180 from what I had decided to focus on. Without ever going to Argentina though I would never have had a focus in the backcountry, because before Argentina I only really knew park riding with pow days being a second priority.

Dew Tour

I competed in the first stop of the Dew Tour in Breckenridge, CO in December. I got 9th and qualified for the rest of the tour, which ended taking up most of my time for January and February. The January stop was in Killington, VT, at that stop I placed 6th. I made it to finals, but a pretty serious slam in practice made me unable to compete. After that was the February stop and also the championship stop was at Snowbird in Utah. I also got 6th at this stop, putting me in 4th overall for the whole tour.
